What Giant are You Facing?

While David faced a giant of physical proportions, there are still “giants” roaming the earth that challenge us in the physical, emotional, mental, and financial realms.

Do you think David woke up the day when he faced Goliath thinking, “I’m going to have to kill a giant today?” Of course not. In fact, he was simply on an errand for his father to deliver food to his brothers and Saul’s army.

While I’m certain he didn’t wake up that day thinking he would be in a battle against a giant before the day’s end, he did wake up knowing he served a mighty God!

David had been preparing for that moment for years. The years he had been alone with the sheep—an outcast from his family in many ways—he used that time well. It was there he learned to worship and commune with God. It was there he learned to hear the voice of God.

David was treated like he was less than others. Have you felt that way? Have you felt you don’t really fit in anywhere? David did. Remember when the prophet Samuel told Jesse to call his sons together? Who wasn’t invited? David. Many theologians believe David was perhaps the product of an affair and not a legitimate son. But what we do know is that Jesse didn’t treat him the same as his brothers.

While looked down on in the eyes of his family, David wasn’t looked down on by God. In fact, God saw him, knew him and bestowed favor upon him. While others overlooked him, God was training him and preparing him, because David had a heart after God. Remember God said He looks on the heart.

Where is your heart today? Is it sold out to God? Do you spend time after you are hurt meditating on the action of what was done to you or meditating on God and how he will deliver you? How He can heal you? One will create a deeper wound, while the other will raise you to your destiny.

When David arrived at the battle line, he had already seen the mighty hand of God deliver him and his sheep from a lion and a bear. He had already seen miraculous victories by the hand of God from hard and even impossible situations.

He had just never faced one as big as Goliath.

David had the opportunity to let fear overtake him after hearing Goliath’s challenge. The rest of Saul’s army were certainly in fear as was Saul. No one was willing to face Goliath.

Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us” (I Sam 17:8-9 NIV).

King Saul’s army had listened to Goliath’s taunts for 40 days. 40! And no one did anything.

But when David arrived at the army's camp and heard Goliath’s prideful challenge against God, righteous indignation arose because David’s heart was already fully God’s. He didn’t just see Goliath’s size. He saw a giant mocking his God.

Courage arose in David’s heart not because of what he could do, but because he knew what God could do. He was unwilling to let the giant have the final say or be victorious over God’s people.

WHAT GIANT STANDS BEFORE YOU TODAY?
Now let me ask you, what giant is standing before you and mocking you? Is it cancer or some other health issue? Perhaps your marriage seems beyond repair. Or your kids or grandkids seem to have turned their backs on God and on you. Do you have more month than money, and no way to pay your bills? With tax day looming, do you have taxes that must be paid, or worse taxes that haven’t been paid in years and you don’t know what to do?

These are all giants. Just as real as the physical giant David faced before he became king. Are you going to listen to them taunt you and mock you to create fear? Or recognize that through the Word and the work of the Cross, that Jesus has already defeated every “giant” that stands against us.

HOW TO OVERCOME
Right now, choose to remember, that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. Don’t give the situation authority over you. See God as the final authority. Find out what His Word says about your situation. Then stand upon it. He will not deny Himself or His Word. If He said He will do it—He will do it. Have courage and know that God has created you to overcome every giant you are facing.

You don’t have to look far to see that the spirit of insanity has been unleashed across the world. The insanity that a man can give birth? That a Supreme Court judge can’t define a woman. The insanity that children are using litter boxes in schools and that school administrators are letting them. There is nothing normal about any of it.
